Colorado became the 38th state to enter the Union in 1876. It was quickly
dubbed the Centennial State as it was the year celebrating the 100th
anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Colorado borders Arizona, Kansas, Wyoming, New Mexico, Oklahoma and
Utah.
The five largest cities are Denver which is the capital, Colorado Springs,
Aurora, Lakewood and Fort Collins.
Much of the state is within sight of the majestic Rocky Mountains so
mountain events, weather and winter sports are part of life in the state.
The state animal is the bighorn sheep, the bird is the lark bunting,
the fish is the greenback cutthroat trout, the flower is the white and
lavender columbine, the gemstone is the aquamarine, the tree is the
Colorado blue spruce and the mineral is the rhodochrosite.
The highest point in the state is Mt Elbert at 14,433 feet.
Although the mountains tower over much of the state, Colorado also
has high rolling prairie. Agriculture consists of cattle, wheat, dairy
products, corn and hay. Industry in the state includes
scientific instruments, food processing, transportation equipment, machinery,
chemical products, gold and other mining and tourism.
Katherine Lee Bates wrote “America the Beautiful” after
being inspired by the view from Pikes Peak.
Denver has the largest city park system in the nation with 205 parks
in City limits and 20,000 Acres of parks in the nearby mountains. It
also hosts the worlds largest Rodeo, the Western Stock show.
Abundant nesting and migrating birds and other native animals provide
a "world-class" watchable wildlife experience. Bald eagles
and other raptors, sandhill cranes, shore birds and water birds can
be seen seasonally at San Luis Lakes near Alamosa.
From the cog railway going to Pikes Peak to the Molly Brown house (Molly
of the Titanic fame) in Denver to the Air Force Academy in Colorado
Springs, Colorado offers old, new and dramatic places and sights for
short or extended visits.
