    North Carolina

North Carolina entered the union in 1789 as the 12th state.  Today Raleigh is the state capital.  It has two nicknames.  One is Old North State and the other and better known name is the Tar Heel State.

Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia border the state as well as the Atlantic Ocean.

The largest cities are Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham and Winston-Salem.

North Carolina’s agriculture includes poultry, eggs, cattle, tobacco and milk. North Carolina produces more sweet potatoes than any other state.  The stare’s industry includes tobacco products, furniture, machinery, textile goods and tourism.

Some of the state’s symbols are:
                Flower is the dogwood
                Tree is the pine
                Bird is the cardinal
                Reptile is the box turtle
                Gemstone is the emerald
                Mammal is the gray squirrel
    Insect is the honeybee

*The Wright Brothers made the first successful powered flight by man at Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk in 1903.
*Due to all the outlet stores,  High Point is known as the furniture capital of the world.
*Havelock is home of Marine Base "Cherry Point." It is the largest air base in the Marine Corps.
    * The first English colony in America was located on Roanoke Island. Walter Raleigh founded it. The colony mysteriously vanished with no trace except for the word "Croatoan" scrawled on a nearby tree.
    * Mount Mitchell in the Blue Ridge Mountains is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. It towers 6,684 feet above sea level.
    * The Biltmore Estate in Ashville is America's largest home, and includes a 255-room chateau, an award-winning winery and extensive gardens.
    * Pepsi was invented and first served in New Bern in 1898.
    * James K. Polk, born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, was the eleventh President of the United States.
