    Iowa

    Iowa became the 29th state in 1846. It borders Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin and is the only state whose east and west borders are 100% formed by water. Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

    The five largest cities in Iowa are Des Moines the state capital, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City and Waterloo.

    Iowa’s main agriculture is hogs, corn, soybeans, oats, cattle, dairy products. Industry includes food processing, machinery, electric equipment, chemical products, printing and publishing, primary metals.

    Born in 1874 in West Branch, Herbert Hoover became the first President born west of the Mississippi River. He was the 31st President and served from 1929 to1933. Another native of Iowa was the actor John Wayne who was born in Winterset. The artist Grant Wood was born in 1892 in Anamosa, Iowa. Much of his work can be seen at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.

    The state bird is the goldfinch, the flower is the wild prairie rose, the tree is the northern red oak and Iowa is known as the geode state. Geode State Park is located in Henry County.

    Spirit Lake is the largest glacier-made lake in the state. West Okoboji is the deepest natural lake in the state. Its depth is 136 feet At 16 miles long it is the longest natural lake in the state. It is one of only three lakes in the world considered to be blue lake. The other two are Lake Geneva in Switzerland and Lake Louise in Canada.

    Yes, the bridges of Madison County are in Iowa. The Imes Bridge is the oldest of the six bridges and the Holliwell Bridge is the longest.

    Elk Horn Iowa in the largest Danish settlement in the United States. Kalona is the largest Amish community west of the Mississippi River.

    The Amana Colonies are a group of seven German villages where even today visitors can enjoy the feel of old Europe. Artisans still make baskets, furniture and clocks. Enjoy the family style cooking and stay in a bed and breakfast or a modern hotel.

    In West Bend there is a grotto that is the symbol of the dedication of a single person’s faith. In 1912 a priest began building the grotto in thanks to God for saving his life when he was very ill. Over many years and thousands of miles of travel, he added rocks to his undertaking. Today it is an amazing site known as the Grotto of the Redemption.
