Indiana became the 19th member of the union in 1816. It’s
;argest cities are Indianapolis (also the state’s capital), Fort
Wayne, Evansville, South Bend and Gary. Indiana is bordered by Illinois,
Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
Another boundary is Lake Michigan and, although Indiana has only 41
miles of waterfront, it is still considered to be one of the Great Lake
states. Additionally, those 41 miles have made Indiana one of the world’s
great industrial centers.
The state’s agriculture includes corn, soybeans, hogs, cattle
and dairy products. Industry output is steel, electronic and transportation
equipment and chemical and coal products.
The state motto is “Cross Roads of America” which is very
true as Indiana has more miles of Interstate Highway per square mile
than any other state. Additionally more major highways intersect in
Indiana than in any other state.
The state flower is the peony, the tree is the tulip tree, the bird
is the cardinal and the stone is limestone from which hundreds of major
buildings throughout the country have been in part constructed. The
nickname is the Hoosier Stste.
The first long-distance auto race in the U. S. was held May 30, 1911,

over 167 miles an hour and the prize is more than $1.2 million. Today
Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the site of the greatest spectacle in
sports, the Indianapolis 500. The Indianapolis 500 is held every Memorial
Day weekend in the Hoosier capital city. The race is 200 laps or 500
miles long.
