From 1775 to 1806, the Washington territory was explored
by several groups including Lewis and Clark who were checking out the
country’s newest acquisition, the Louisiana Purchase.
Washington came into the union in 1821 as the 24th state.
It is the only state named after a President. It’s bounded by
Idaho on the east, Oregon on the south, the International border with
Canada on the north and the Pacific Ocean on the west. Olympia is the
capital. The state bird is the Willow Goldfinch and the flower is the
Coast Rhododendron. Washington is known as the Evergreen State. The
state tree is the Western Hemlock.
The rich volcanic soil has made Washington a huge producer of many types
of crops including apples, cherries, apricots, grapes, pears, asparagus,
and potatoes to name a few. Fishing also plays a major role in the state’s
economy. Salmon and halibut are shipped all over the world.
Washington boasts over 1000 dams including the Grand Coulee which provides
power and irrigation. The military has a huge presence in the Navy based
along the coast. And aircraft and missile building are major providers
of jobs as well as an active lumber industry.
Seattle, Tacoma and Spokane are the state’s largest cities.
Washington has many state and national parks where visitors can hike
and camp or just drive through and enjoy nature at its finest. Among
the major points of interest are Mt Rainier, Mt. St Helens and the Cascades
National Park. Additionally Seattle has Pike’s Market, the Space
Needle and even an underground city.
Washington has 47 glaciers which is more than contained in all the lower
48 states combined.
From the coastal water sports to the mountains with summer as well as
winter sports, Washington draws visitors year around.
The state flower is the Coast Rhododendron, and it's state bird is the
Willow Goldfinch.
