Georgia became a state in 1788. It was the fourth of the original 13
colonies and is bordered by Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South
Carolina and Tennessee. It is also bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Georgia
is the largest state east of the Mississippi River.
The five largest cities are Atlanta, which is the state capital, Augusta,
Columbus, Savannah and Athens.
Georgia’s agriculture includes poultry, eggs and dairy products,
peanuts, livestock and vegetables. It is the nation’s number one
producer of the three Ps--peanuts, pecans, and peaches. Known as the
sweetest onion in the world, the Vidalia onion can only be grown in
the fields around Vidalia and Glennville The states industry consists
of textiles and clothing, transportation equipment, food and tourism.
The state symbols are: amphibian–green tree frog, the bird is
the brown thrasher, the fish is the large mouth bass, the crop is the
peanut, the tree is the live oak and the state flower is the Cherokee
rose. Georgia’s nickname is “The Peach State”.
Georgia is the birthplace of our 39th president. James Earl Carter
(better known as Jimmy Carter).
The Civil War had a major impact on Georgia which joined the Confederacy
on January 19, 1861. Chickamuga National Park is the site of the bloodiest
battle in American history. Andersonville, or Camp Sumter as it was
officially known, was a Confederate military prison. During the 14 months
the prison existed, more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined here.
Of these, almost 13,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition,
overcrowding, or exposure to the elements.
On a lighter side, the theme park - Six Flags Over Georgia, was for
six flags that flew over Georgia. England, Spain, Liberty, Georgia,
Confederate States of America, and the United States
Coca-Cola was invented in May 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton in Atlanta.
Lots of history and fun can be found in Georgia. It is no wonder many
people can say they have “Georgia On My Mind”.
