In February of each year Tucson is host to the world’s largest
Rock and Gem Show. Exhibitors, hobbyists and casual sightseers
flow into the city. Most every hotel has at least one or two
vendors who have a room (or several) of wonderful jewels or rock collections
to sell or trade. But the show does not stop when everyone packs
up and goes home. The University has its own brand of show and
you don’t have to wait until February to see it.
Rockhounds will delight in the exhibits at the Mineral Museum. It
houses an impressive collection of over 15,000 specimens and over 6,000
specimens that are under magnification.
Did you even know that this world has more than 1,900 different kinds
of minerals? Well, they are on display at the museum.
The museum exhibits are divided into eight categories: Minerals from
Mexico, Arizona, Bisbee, Tiger and the Glove Mine, the Systematic Collection,
Gemstones, Meteorites, and Radioactive Minerals.
